A/N: The story Mary read Dean is Sam I am by Dr. Seuss. Oh, and just so you know, that little hide and seek thing? Totally works on 2 year olds. I'm talking from experience here ;)

Just Another Day of Normal

1980

"Vrrrrroooooom..." Dean pushed his little toy truck through the city streets made of building blocks. He was sitting on the carpet, his Hot Wheels and Legos scattered around him, forgotten, as he played with the truck. He glanced up at the TV screen every now and then, but Mommy had switched it from his cartoons to some boring guy talking about the freak storms they'd been having lately, and who cared about that, anyway?

Dean made more car noises, pushing his truck around, when loud noises made him stop. He straightened, listening, and then frowned, tilting his head to the side. Mommy and Daddy were arguing in the kitchen. The cars and building blocks forgotten, Dean pushed to his chubby feet and dashed to the kitchen to find out what was going on.

Mommy was by the sink, washing the dishes, while Daddy leaned against the fridge. They didn't stop arguing when Dean came in, and the little boy looked from one parent to the other. "Daddy?"

"Not now, Dean," Mary snapped, "Go play with your toys." Dean blinked and lowered his eyes, scuffing his shoe.

"Hey, don't take it out on him!" John snapped back, and Dean looked from Daddy to Mommy and back, a little scared, because Mommy and Daddy were raising their voices, and they only did that when he was being bad. Mary sighed and put the plate she was holding aside, even though it still had some soap on it. Her shoulders sagged and she turned to him.

"Dean, why don't you and Daddy play hide and seek?" She suggested, and Dean's eyes lit up. He liked playing hide and go seek. He was the best at it, Daddy said. "Go see if Daddy's hiding in the living room," Mary said. Dean's little face scrunched up the way it always did when he was thinking hard. It sounded like a trick.

"But..." he tried, but Mary cut him off.

"Go, before Daddy wins," she said. John glared at her.

"I win!" Dean exclaimed, a little insulted, and dashed back to the living room.

He looked. Daddy wasn't hiding behind the sofa, he wasn't under the table. Dean even checked the closet, but Daddy wasn't there. So Dean promptly ran back to the kitchen to report that Daddy was, in fact, not in the living room.

Mommy and Daddy were arguing again. Dean ran up to Mommy and held onto her leg, trying to get her attention. "Mommy, Daddy's not in the living room," he informed her.

"Dean, go play." Mary said. She sounded angry. Dean looked up at her. He didn't do anything wrong. At least, he didn't think so. Mommy shouldn't be angry at him. He stuck his lower lip out, sniffling. It was his 'I'm insulted' face; sort of his way of warning his parents that he was about to cry - loudly - unless something was done to placate him. And soon.

"Here, buddy. Come here," John said. He crouched and reached his hands out to Dean, sending Mary an angry look. Dean ran over to him.

"You're not in the living room," Dean said indignantly, "You're here!"

"That's right, little man," John said. He smiled, tussling Dean's hair and poked him in the belly, making Dean giggle. "You won," John said as Dean wrapped his little arms around John's neck.

"I'm serious, John!" Mary snapped, and Dean looked at her, clinging closer to his father. Why was Mommy mad at him? He won, she was supposed to be proud and give him cookies and kisses. Maybe she was mad he didn't find Daddy in the living room, but Daddy was right here, in the kitchen...

Dean bounced a little, letting Daddy know he wanted down. John put him back on the floor, and Dean went back to Mommy, tugging her pant leg.

"Don't be mad, Mommy," the toddler said, "I'm being a good boy," he added, looking up at his mother.

He must have said something right, because Mommy's frown had turned upside down and she smiled at him and picked him up.

"Yes, you are," she said and kissed his cheek and the top of his head. "You are a good baby."

Dean scrunched his face up again. He glowered at his mother. "No baby! I'mma big boy!" He said indignantly. Mary laughed.

Dean looked curiously at his mother, wondering what was so funny, but she kissed him again, so Dean figured everything was okay now. "Mommy not mad anymore?" He asked, just to be sure.

"No, angel. Mommy's not mad at you," Mary said and gave John a pointed look as she got out of the kitchen, John following more slowly.

Dean struggled in Mary's arms, reaching pudgy hands to his father. He wanted to play airplanes with Daddy.

"Come on, kiddo, it's late. Time for your bath." Mary said, and Dean froze. He narrowed his eyes, grabbing Mary's face with both hands.

"No bath!" He said, slow and clear.

Dean loved his mother, he really did, but she was really slow sometimes. Dean hated taking baths, he thought he was pretty clear about that.

"No bath," John said quickly, taking Dean from Mary, "But I want to teach you a new game."

"John,"

"New game?" Dean cocked his head to the side, intrigued. Games he liked. Daddy always came up with the best games.

"Yeah. We'll play submarines. How 'bout that?" John asked, bouncing Dean on his hip.

"Sumbarines?" The word felt strange in Dean's mouth, but it made Mommy and Daddy laugh, so he said it again, pleased he made his parents laugh.

hhhhhhhhhhggggggggg

"Hey, Dean, why don't you go and bring me a clean diaper from your room while I fill up the tub?" John suggested. Dean looked at him suspiciously.

"Why?" It wasn't like he was taking a bath or anything...

"Because," John said, "we're going to play submarines, and that means the diaper can get wet. So, just in case, okay?" Dean thought about it for a moment.

"What's a sumbarine?" Dean asked, edging towards the tub and peering at the rising water.

"Well," John grunted as he changed positions and sat on his knees, feeling the water temperature. "Submarines are like big boats. But they don't just float on the water, they dive inside the water," he explained. Dean stood on the tips of his toes, peering into the tub. He was pretty sure Daddy was trying to trick him into taking a bath, but it was okay. Dean liked it when Daddy gave him baths and played games with him.

"But boats are supposed to float. Is a sumbarine a boat that's broken?" Dean asked, and John laughed.

"No, kiddo," he said, pulling Dean to him and kissing the top of his head. "It's just a different kind of ship, it's supposed to be underwater."

Dean looked at him. He didn't really get it. Ships were supposed to be on the water, not under it. Unless they sink, and then it means they're broken. Broken toys are no fun. Well, except for his teddy bear. But Bear only had one eye missing, he wasn't really broken.

John nudged him a little. "You gonna go get the diaper?" He asked.

"Why?" Dean asked again.

"Because, if we play submarines, you're gonna get wet. You want your diaper to get all wet and smelly?" Dean shook his head, blond hair flailing.

"Then go get the diaper."

"Okay!" Dean declared, running off towards his room. He only slipped once, but it didn't really hurt.

Finding the clean diapers wasn't easy. Dean knew Mommy kept them in a special bag, with a yellow duck on the side, but he didn't remember where she put it. He looked in his toy chest, spilling it on the floor to make sure he didn't miss it, but it wasn't there. He looked under the bed, and then in the closet, finally finding it near the chest of drawers. Dean struggled to get it open, and finally pulled a diaper out, falling backwards.

Shaking his head, Dean got to his feet, picked the diaper back up, and ran back to the bathroom. He slipped twice this time, and it kinda hurt, too, but he was brave and didn't cry.

"Here, Daddy," Dean said, presenting his father with the diaper.

"Thanks, little dude," John said with a smile. And then he told Dean more stories about submarines. Dean loved it when Daddy told him stories like that, he didn't even care when Daddy stripped him and put him in the tub. Daddy even let him put some of his toys in the tub with him and pretend they were all broken ships. Daddy was the best ever. Even if he was sneaky and pretended he wasn't giving Dean a bath.

"You know, Skipper, I think it's time to start potty training you." John said thoughtfully. He yelped when Dean splased him with water, and Dean giggled. "Hey, not cool." John said, and stopped Dean before he could do it again.

"What's potty taining, Daddy?" Dean asked.

"You're a big boy now, right?" John asked, and Dean nodded vigorously. "So it's time you go potty like big boys. No more diapers."

Dean just stared at him.

"You don't really need those baby diapers, do you?" John asked. Dean kept staring. "Oh, come on, you don't like walking around with a smelly diaper, do you?" He asked, tickling Dean. Dean giggled.

"No, Daddy."

"Naw," John drawled. "You want more bubbles?" He asked, and Dean nodded. John added more soap, soaping Dean up as he told him stories of sailors who sailed for weeks and weeks with smelly diapers because they forgot to get potty trained and ended up smelling worse than dead fish. Dean laughed so hard at that.

Finally, John let Dean remove the stopper and watch all the water go down the drain. He wrapped Dean in a towel, breathing in the baby smell, mixed with soap and clean and love.

Turning a little, John noticed Mary watching them, a smile on her face. She didn't seem angry anymore, as she looked at both her men with eyes full of love and pride.

"Mommy not mad anymore?" Dean asked, and Mary's smile widened.

"No, baby. Mommy's not mad anymore." She said. John smiled back at her, nodding a little, and Mary nodded back. John picked a towel-wrapped Dean in his arms.

"Come'ere. I got you," he said, kissing the top of his boy's head, and joining his wife as they both went over to Dean's room to put the boy to sleep.

"John," Mary sighed at the mess Dean'd left behind in his search for his diaper. John ducked his head, looking sheepish and Mary cuffed him playfully on the back of his head.

"Airplains, Daddy!" Dean cried, rubbing one eye with a tiny fist.

"Airplains, huh?" John mused, and then twisted Dean over in his arms and made airplain noises, flying Dean around the room until he crash-landed on the bed, laughing.

"Mommy story?" Dean looked hopefully at his mother. Mary hesitated, looking at all the mess around the room, and then smirked.

"Sure angel. Mommy will read you a story, and Daddy will clean up your room, how's that?" she asked, her smirk widening as John's shoulders sagged.

"Yay!" Dean cried, burrowing under his blanket and holding Bear tight.

"Yay," Mary smiled, picking out a book to read Dean. She sat down next to her boy, tilting the book slightly so he could look at the pictures.

"Do you like green eggs and ham?" She read as John picked up the toys around them. Dean scrunched up his face.

"Yuck! I like chocolate and ice cream," he said, making his parents smile. He sat up, looking at his mother. "Can I have..."

"No, it's story time now," Mary cut him off, "And then it's sleepy time," she added before the toddler had time to protest. Dean pouted. "You want Mommy to read you the story?" Mary asked, and Dean nodded, hugging Bear again as Mary read on.

Mary closed the book and got up from the bed, putting the book back in its place.

"Told you he'd like it," John said from his place by the wall. Mary smiled at him, and then turned to look at their sleeping baby boy.

"You coming?" She asked from the doorway. John raised a brow. "Well, you did such a good job picking up all the toys, I think it's okay to go play now..." Mary teased, smirking. John smiled.

John had to hand it to his kid. He sure had the best way to end up a fight without John losing it and sleeping on the couch...

Minor correction: the book is Green Eggs and Ham and the character is Sam-I-am.

This was cute - I liked the interaction between Dean and John, especially, and it's great to see a moment that isn't so idyllic in the Winchester household. I know Dean's little and grown-up arguments don't make sense, but I do wish we as the audience had been given enough clues to figure out what they were arguing about.... Unless I'm just dense?

Oops...
Ok, I admit, I never read the story, so... uh... oops... *is blushing*
About the fight - it was important to me NOT to show what they were fighting about. I imagine it was probably something stupid, like leaving the toilet seat up or working too long, or spending too much money on the car or whatever. Just to show that things weren't perfect before, that they had fights like everyone else.

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this glimpse into the early life of the Winchester family. I especially appreciate that you didn't vilify Mary. So many people seem to genuinely dislike her, and I've never understood it. I think the way you express family dynamics here is very realistic and beautifully detailed. Plus, Dean's adorable! Thanks for sharing!

This was so sweet. I just love wee!Dean so much;)

And John and Marys fight I liked that too, cause they would fight light any other couple...

""You're not in the living room," Dean said indignantly, "You're here!""
That was such a cute line.

LOL, they're too tragically adorable.

*psst* I saw you commented on Kripke's panel. Did you notice he mentioned the necklace? Haha. Gotta love that man, also about Dean being more of a hero because he's so human. God, the man stole the words right out of my mouth, damn him. Made my morning, that.

Yeah, I saw the thing about the neckless. *eyeroll* I'll believe it when I see it. Also, it's gonna be a letdown, again. Like I said, the mystery of the neckless, as far as I'm concerened, is gone. Ruined. Too much of a build and a sucky delivery, imho. So yeah, he said that, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm more excited about the possibility of a John/Mary episode (can I get a squee-ee?)
And huh? I saw he said he feels the show is Dean's story, but I didn't read anything else about it. Did he really say that? *squishes TETIK*
I read Carol's post, I don't know why, but it wasn't TOO spoilery. I haven't read anything else, and probably won't until the faNily cleans stuff up a bit and remove the spoilers...

LOL, well, I've always said there was more to the necklace than just how Dean got it. So, I'm willing to hold my breath on that one. I was actually not excited at all to get more John/Mary. I mean, yay for the boys if they get some time off filming because the episode's not as focused on them, but I never really got the squee over them.

And yeah, Eric actually said that about it being Dean's story, though I think the quote came out of context. I think, from what I read in other comments, that he said Dean is the more human of the two, so he's the one that the viewers can more easily identify with, the kind of hero we can aspire to be sort of thing. He also mentioned something about Dean's perserverance in the face of so much adversity is a sign of great faith, which has always been my contention. It's way harder to believe in a good outcome when you don't have that certainty that there's a higher power in your corner, way harder to keep going when you've never been anything but let down. I swear, the man was reading my posts back when I used to post on sn.tv, because I distinctly remember saying exactly that and having the resident Sam-girl browbeater jump in my thread and accuse me of saying Sam wasn't a hero because he had powers. The bitch. LOL.

Oh, and that crazy zine editor I've mentioned before is doing a zine on Mystery Spot missing scenes, basically all the ways Dean died. If you want to submit one, I can send you the information. If stats are getting you down, then maybe you'd like writing for a zine, since you don't get any real feedback on those, just the pleasure of seeing your story in print.

Ah well, the bunnies might still die under my carefully placed Ariats and can go back to writing my other two stories. Dang, I got 15000 words on two different stories and no end in sight on either one, but at least one of them has to be finished by May 1 for big bang, lol. *bangs head against desk* I so don't need to be having bunnies biting me right now.
