I definitely missed Sam in this ep, too, despite what others are saying about his presence "being felt" through out the ep. As far as the plot holes and slightly wonky details and things go, though. . . .

Honestly? Looking on it, I think this is one of the better "exposition airlines" episodes I've seen on a show. A) the math, for the most part, worked (unlike Spike's back-story on BtVS). B) it was presented in a moderately interesting format (unlike, well, the "exposition airlines" ep of Alias, where Kendall just sat Syd down and told her what happened). C) It at least vaguely makes sense (unlike everything that ever tries to explain anything on Heroes, IMO).

Yeah, I don't think it was superfantasticcrazyAmericandanceparty! great. I don't think it was terrible, either. And it might have set up some very interesting developments later on.
